2012 CLINIC PICTURES

JEREMY GUTHRIE DAY

Thanks to everyone that came out for the clinic- kids and coaches. I think it went really well. The weather cooperated, and we had a good turnout of about 80 kids. The kids received a lot of good instruction from Jeremy, and Jeremy was his usual fantastic self both on and off the field. Each kid got to hit 3 pitches from Jeremy, which I'm sure took him way over any pitch count he's ever had in the past.

Last year's message was believe in yourself. This year we focused on what we do when things don't go right. The answer- Work Hard. With that good things will come.

Thanks Jeremy. There isn't a better source of inspiration anywhere !

JEREMY GUTHRIE CLINIC DAY

Clinic Day is just about here (Friday Oct 12). I'm super excited that for the second straight year we'll have Jeremy Guthrie here fresh off a very successful campaign with the Kansas City Royals. As unbelievable as this sounds though, the weather report calls for 30% chance of rain on Friday. Irregardless, we are on rain or shine.

13:00- We'll start with a brief intro of what we're going to focus on.
13:15- On the field (or in the gym) we'll break into smaller groups, warm up, and go over pitching fielding and hitting skills.
15:30- Jeremy's talk, Q&A, and time for fotos and autographs.
17:30 (plus or minus)- We're done.

Due to limited capacity the on the field skills portion will be for Machine Pitch and Senior Kid Pitch levels only. Coach Pitch kids are welcome to come for Jeremy's talk, meet him, and get autographs and pictures. I hope to see you all this Friday !

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY OCT 6

Baseball fans we are looking good for this Saturday. The weather will most likely cooperate and we will be out at the field for pick up games as planned. Please see below for the scheduled times. Don't forget to bring your gloves and that the snack shack will not be open for business. I know. Disappointing. What's baseball without hot dogs...

See you all Saturday.

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY SEP 29

The weather is looking very poor today and not much better for tomorrow (Saturday). If its raining, games will be cancelled. If there is any doubt please call your coach from last year or get in touch with me directly.

FALL BASEBALL WEEK 1

Just a reminder that this Saturday will be our first day of Fall Baseball this year. Please see below for the scheduled times. Please keep in mind the following:
- These games will be very casual. Those that want to play and have no previous commitments should just come out. We'll pick teams and play.
- Snack Shack will not be open for business. Sorry...
- Most importantly please remember that if you have signed up for other activities or have previous obligations ie other sports, music lessons, dance classes, school events, etc etc please make these your top priority. There is no obligation to Fall Baseball and will have no impact on when the league forms in February.

Thanks and see you all soon....

FALL BASEBALL 2012

I hope everyone had a good summer and is happily back into their normal routines of work and school. As some of you have probably already heard, this year we're going to have 3 weeks of Fall Baseball starting Saturday Sep 29. The plan is to have 2 weeks of informal pick up games and 1 week of a clinic. I'm really excited about the clinic as we are going to have the good fortune of Jeremy Guthrie returning. Jeremy used to pitch for the Baltimore Orioles but now pitches for the Kansas City Royals. He will be here the afternoon of Friday the 12th of October. He's going to give an instructional clinic on pitching, fielding, and hitting, for the older kids (9 and up) followed by a talk on his baseball experience. Due to size constraints unfortunately we have to limit the clinic to the Senior and Junior Kids. However I would like to invite the Coach Pitch kids to watch and listen to Jeremy's talk following the clinic. There will be time to meet and chat with him, ask questions, get autographs, and take pictures.

Here is the schedule for the 3 weeks which will all take place at the ASM baseball field. We'll have pick up games the first 2 weeks. All you need to do is show up, bring your gloves, we'll make teams and play.

Saturday Sep 29
13:00 to 14:30 Coach Pitch.
14:30 to 16:00 Machine Pitch.
16:00 to 17:30 Senior Kid Pitch.

Saturday Oct 6
13:00 to 14:30 Coach Pitch.
14:30 to 16:00 Machine Pitch.
16:00 to 17:30 Senior Kid Pitch.

Friday Oct 12-
Friday is a national holiday. I hope everyone will be able to make it. We’ll follow a similar format to last year- He’ll give a short talk on what we’re going to focus on during the clinic, followed by work on the field focused on pitching, fielding, and some hitting, followed by a longer chat on his experiences over the past year, challenges that lie ahead for him, Q&A, pictures and autographs. Like last year to get the most of his time here we're going to limit it to around 50 kids who play at the Junior and Senior Kid levels. Start time will be 13:00. I hope I can count on you all to be there and help out. While things can always change at the last minute this looks like a pretty sure thing at this point.

Hope to see you all there....

BASEBALL WRAP UP 2012

I hope you all agree we had a pretty decent season this year. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you all for being a part of Madrid League Baseball and sharing a part of your weekends with us over the past 4 months. All in we had 13 weeks of baseball this year (1 more than last year). Here are a few more of the highlights which I hope were as fun for you all as they were for me.
- This year we had 216 kids in the league ranging in age from 4 to 16. 130 of the kids came from outside the American School making it truely a community league.
- The snack shack sales went very well this year (especially the last few weeks). The candy, drinks, and hot dog sales were strong enough so that we'll be able to replace a lot of the old equipment, and even fund a baseball event again for this Fall. Thanks to everyone that helped with the shipping, delivery, and working in the snack shack.
- I'd like to congratulate all of the teams on their accomplishments this year. The Seniors were fantastic in winning both games of their home and away series with Villabilla. To the extent that balanced teams are pretty important for the 2 teams at this level, going in to the last week it was 6-6. It doesn't get any closer than that....
- At the Machine Pitch level the Rockies for plugging away over the long season and then showing their true talent in a blow out victory in the last game. The Marlins and Nationals for many exciting games over the season. And especially the Lady Rangers. The all girls team were the highlight of the season for me. I'm pretty sure they had a few other people pulling for them as well. A lot of us went into the first time ever all girls team a little skeptical, but in the end they proved us all wrong. They played strong, hit and fielded very well, were humble in victory and magnanamous when they lost. Thanks girls. Over the course of the season each of these teams proved that any team could win on any given day.
- Another first this year was we had 6 teams at the Coach Pitch level. The Orioles (the youngest of the 6 teams) managed to make it all the way to the Coach Pitch finals. In the end the Reds were just too good though.
- Thanks to the coaches for your time and dedication. Without you all none of this would have been possible. The hours you put into the weekly practices really was evident as the season went on and skill levels improved.
- Thanks to Roland, Leigh, Jon, Alex, and Jon for helping out withg the umpiring. Much appreciated.
- It was great to see the kids at all levels not only develop their skills but build their confidence, learn to believe in themselves, deal with both frustration and success, the value of team work and good sportsmanship, and that as long as they try they can accomplish anything. And I do mean kids of all ages from Tee Ball to the Seniors. Thanks to you all for realizing this and emphasizing it above all else.
- Perhaps most rewarding for me was to look around and see the stands full, that kids came early to their games as well as stay on after theirs were over, that parents and siblings hung around to socialize, and make new friends, and to know that we made a difference.

And thats it.... I'll try to get some pictures up here as well for visual memories, so please keep checking from time to time. I hope you all have a great summer, and please stay tuned for more Madrid League Baseball this Fall and again next year....

Thanks.

If you weren't there to see the Seniors game against Villabilla, you missed a classic. Our Seniors won with a walk off home run in the bottom of the 7th by Anthony Rojas. It was a great game marked by outstanding pitching, a couple of the best plays I've ever seen in the field, and needless to say timely hitting. Well done Seniors and Congratulations.

BASEBALL FOR THE WEEKEND OF MAY26 AND 27

Hi All

3 weeks left in this years season. This weekend we have a couple of special events to go along with the Saturday baseball.
- There will be a parents softball game on Sunday the 27th at 1:00. It will be a great opportunity to try first hand how difficult something can be that looks so easy... Please come as it will be casual and friendly in nature.
- Sunday the 27th our Seniors will also have a game at our field against Villabilla starting at 16:00. Please come out and support our kids and see if they win both games of this year's home and away series against Villabilla.
- Saturday marks the start of the 3 weeks of playoffs for the Coach Pitch league. Teams 1 and 2 will play to see who gets the top seed. Team 6 will play team 3, and team 5 will play team 4. All teams will advance with the winners squaring off over the following 2 weeks to determine who the Coach Pitch champions will be this year. I'd like to commend everyone at this level for the excellent sportsmanship demonstarted over the course of the season.

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY MAY 19

We're getting towards the last few weeks of the season now. The time and effort the coaches have been putting in is really showing. The quality of the games, the skill levels of the kids and their baseball knowledge has improved at an accelerating pace over the past few weeks.

Here's the schedule for this Saturday:
10:00 Tee Ball   Braves vs Angels
10:00 Coach Pitch   Blue Jays vs Reds
11:00 Coach Pitch   Yankees vs Mets
12:30 Coach Pitch   Orioles vs Mariners
14:00 Machine Pitch   Rockies vs Nationals
15:30 Machine Pitch   Rangers vs Marlins
17:00 Senior Kid Pitch   Diamondbacks vs Padres

I know as we get towards the end of the season people have a lot of commitments between other sports, parties, scouting activities, and family affairs. Its really appreciated if you all can make every effort to participate in your scheduled games. If you don't, there are 17 other kids that fall short and don't get to play... Thanks and see you all this Saturday.

April 28 Games Cancelled

Unfortunately Mother Nature is not a baseball fan. We're rained out and all games are cancelled for today, April 28. The forecast looks like rain on and off all day. Given the limited numbers we were looking for due to the holiday weekend, we best set out sights on next weekend. Thanks...

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY APRIL 28

First lets all congratulate our Seniors for a stunning victory against the Villabilla team this past weekend. They hit the ball hard and played excellent ball in the field.

Secondly I hope everyone has heard that there will be baseball this Saturday April 28. It seems there won't be many people traveling this weekend so we are going to try and make up for the games that were rained out the 14th. The only exception is there will be no tee ball. Repeat no tee ball this weekend.

So- Here's the schedule for this Saturday
10:00 Coach Pitch   Yankees vs Blue Jays
11:00 Coach Pitch   Orioles vs Reds
12:30 Coach Pitch   Mets vs mariners
14:00 Machine Pitch   Marlins vs Nationals

SATURDAY APRIL 14- RAINED OUT

Unfortunately we are victims of the weather today. All games cancelled for today. Better luck next week...

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY APRIL 14

I hope everyone had a good Semana Santa and are ready for Madrid League Baseball action again. We're going to raise the bar a touch in the ongoing effort to increase our skill level at the game. Here are few changes you may notice:
- Coach Pitch: We're going to try and maintain clear definition between infield players and outfield players. Firm 7 pitch count limit per batter. Coaches physically helping by pushing, stopping, carrying, or enhancing the baserunners movements will not be allowed.
- Machine Pitch: Runners will be allowed to advance on balls that get past the catcher, including the batter on a missed 3rd strike. 5 pitches or 3 swinging strikes (whichever comes first) per batter. Increased pitch velocity. And as above no physically assisting base runners.
- Senior: There will be leading and stealing allowed starting with this week's games.

And with that, here's the schedule for this week:
10:00 Tee Ball Braves vs Angels
10:00 Coach Pitch Yankees vs Blue Jays
11:00 Coach Pitch Orioles vs Reds
12:30 Coach Pitch Mets vs Mariners
14:00 Machine Pitch Rockies vs Rangers
15:30 Machine Pitch Marlins vs Nationals
17:00 Senior Kid Pitch Diamondbacks vs Padres

Please remember if it has been raining a lot prior to Saturday or on Saturday morning, please check with your coaches. I will try and have a yes or no by 9:15 for the early games. Hopefully this won't be the case though and I'll see you all Saturday....

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY MARCH 31

Its hard to believe we're already at the week before Semana Santa and the last week of baseball before we take a week off. The season is coming along nicely I reckon.
- First a few thanks: Thanks to everyone for not eating anywhere outside the baseball seating area. Its very important that we continue to keep the area clean. Thanks to the coaches and parents helping out with keeping the competition at a friendly level. And a big THANKS to Roland for helping with the umpiring duties.
- We're going to raise the bar a little on the field going forward. This means in Coach Pitch we'll stick to the pitch count of 7 hitable pitches per batter, and no physically 'helping' the runners as they round the bases. In Machine Pitch we're going to increase the pitch speed a little. It will mean a few less hits and runs for a while but no doubt the kids will adapt quickly and raise their game to a new level.
- Lastly I know this is Semana Santa and many of you will be traveling. Those that are around please don't forget that there is baseball this Saturday the 31st. If you're playing in the 2nd or 3rd games for your level you may want to come out early (or stay later) just in case the earlier/later game doesn't have enough players. And on that note here's the schedule...

10:00 Tee Ball Angels vs Braves
10:00 Coach Pitch Mets vs Reds
11:00 Coach Pitch Mariners vs Yankees
12:30 Coach Pitch Orioles vs Blue Jays
14:00 Machine Pitch Marlins vs Rockies
15:30 Machine Pitch Nationals vs Rangers
17:00 Senior Kid Pitch Padres vs Diamondbacks

And thats it. Hope to see as many people as possible this Saturday...

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

BASEBALL FOR SATURDAY MARCH 24

Hi Everyone- Just a couple points for this week.
- Those games last week were fantastic. The plays the coach pitch kids are making this early in the season are amazing. At the Machine Pitch level who would have thought that both games could end in 11-11 ties. If you play late you might want to consider coming out early to watch the younger kids play, If you play early you should definitely hang around to watch the older kids...
- There is baseball this Saturday March 24 and also March 31. There is no baseball Saturday April 7. I know the 31st is the start of Semana Santa. Even if we have a light turnout its better than no turn out for those of us not traveling. So please plan on coming if you're here.
- Its been a little cold and rainy so far this week. The forecast looks like its going to turn for the better, but if there is any doubt on Saturday morning please call your coach or myself.

And with no further delay here's the schedule for this week:
10:00 Tee Ball Angels vs Braves
10:00 Coach Pitch Jays vs Mariners
11:00 Coach Pitch Orioles vs Mets
12:30 Coach Pitch Yankees vs Reds
14:00 Machine Pitch Rockies vs Nationals
15:30 Machine Pitch Rangers vs Marlins
17:00 Senior Kid Diamondbacks vs Padres

See you all Saturday....

- Hopefully everyone has their uniforms and is receiving weekly emails from the coaches (except for tee ball).
- Now that we have the first couple weeks under our belts we'll be moving forward with more proper baseball. This means that we'll be looking for a bit more position discipline and applying the the rules of the game more closely. Please understand that the all the coaches are out there doing the best they can in order facilitate the league and what we're trying to accomplish. That being to learn good sportsmanship, good baseball fundamentals, and have a little fun in a pleasant environment.

MADRID LEAGUE BASEBALL 2012

Finally the season has arrived. Thanks to everyone that attended, and helped out with the clinic. We had a great turnout that far surpassed expectations. As such we're going to have a bigger league this year.

Here is the list of teams for Madrid League Baseball 2012:
Tee Ball: Braves and Angels.
Coach Pitch: Mets, Jays, Yankees, Orioles, Reds, Mariners.
Machine Pitch: Marlins, Rangers, Nationals, Rockies.
Senior Kid: Padres, Diamondbacks.

With the increase in numbers this year it was even more complicated trying to get teams put together with an emphasis on balance, safety, and family accomodation. As such I hope everyone will be happy with their team assignments.

Uniforms are mostly here. We've had to late order 2 new teams given the increase in numbers this year. Candy and snacks are here and will be ready for sale on opening day.

If you haven't heard from your coach with your team assignment by March 1 please contact me.

I'm really excited that this year is going to be more fun than ever. So lets get ready to Play Ball !

Monday, February 13, 2012

CLINIC

Hi- Just a reminder that the clinic / evaluation day will be Saturday Feb 18.

- If you played in Senior Kid or Machine Pitch last year please plan on arriving at 13:00 especially if you are registering on that day itself. We will start at 13:30 sharp and will go until about 15:00.
- If you were in coach Pitch or Tee Ball last year please plan on arriving at 15:00. This session should last until around 17:30. Registration tends to be chaotic so if you are registering on that day please allow extra time.
- The field ssession will consist of 3 stations: Hitting, Fielding, and Throwing. The kids will get marked on their skills in those 3 areas which we will then use to make team assignments.
- Our goal is to have 2 Senior Kid teams, 4 Machine Pitch teams, 4 Coach Pitch teams, and 2 Tee Ball teams. The top priority is to have well balanced teams geared towards safety. This means that no one should be playing at a level either too advanced or not advanced enough. The levels will be based more on skill than by age.
- We will try to honor requests for siblings to be on the same team, and make allowances for those that live farther away to be paired up for driving purposes. Unfortunately it is largely impossible to honor requests of kids only wanting to play if they can be on their friends team.
- We still can use more coaches. Anyone interested in helping out coaching please contact me or lets have a chat on the clinic day itself.
- In case its raining on the 18th our make up date will be Saturday Feb 25. If there's any doubt please call me.
- If you can't be there on the 18th its very important that you let me know ahead of that day so that we can assign the kids to teams even if they arent there for the clinic.

Lets hope it warms up a few degrees and I'm looking forward to getting things going for another great season.... See you all the 18th.

Monday, February 6, 2012

REGISTRATION

Just a reminder that the registration table will be open after school on Monday and Tuesday Feb 6 & 7 at ASM, and also Monday and Tuesday Feb 13 & 14. If you can't make it to ASM please feel free to email me the forms or you can always sign up on the clinic day itself on Saturday the 18th.

Thanks and lets hope it warms up a bit....

I hope everyone had a good holiday season and that 2012 is off to a good start for you all. And now the good news- We're starting to get things organized for this year's baseball season. There's a lot of information here so please take the time to look through all of the points please.

If you can't make it to ASM to register you can register 1- By email by completing the attached forms and emailing them back to me, or 2- In person on the clinic day itself.
- Very important: If you have any requests or limitations with respect to siblings on the same team, requests for team assignments to facilitate car pooling, or practice limitations, please note them on the registration form. I can't guarantee they will be honored but we'll try. First priority will be balanced teams, second siblings, and third driving for families coming from far away. Sorry but requests to be on a team with friends will not be possible.

The Clinic: The date is Saturday Feb 18. If you were in either Senior Kid Pitch or Machine Pitch last year your session will start at 13:30 sharp. The clinic will last about 2 hours per session. We will run the players through some drills and make up the teams that same day.
- Very Very Important: I am aware that these dates might conflict with school holiday schedules in Feb. If you can't make it to the clinic please let me know in advance so that we can keep it in mind when we make up the teams.
- If the weather is bad on the 18th, the makeup date will be Saturday Feb 25. If you're not sure on the day itself please call me.
- If you're not sure what session to come to call or email me.

Coaches: We already have some volunteer coaches but we can always use more. Please let me know if you're willing to help out in this regard.

Uniforms: have been ordered from the US this year and are all here. They are currently at the printers and should be ready by the time the season starts.

League: Hopefully we'll have enough kids to have the same format as last year. 2 tee ball teams, 4 coach pitch teams, 4 machine pitch teams, 2 senior kid teams.

Snack Shack: We have ordered snacks and they will be of the usual nutritional value. Snack Shack will not be open for business on the day of the clinic.
